The father of a slain Muslim American soldier hit back at Donald Trump late Saturday, saying the Republican presidential nominee’s criticism of the bereaved parents indicated he “has no soul” and is “void of empathy.”
At the Democratic convention on Saturday, lawyer Khizr Khan gave a moving tribute to his son, Humayun, who received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart after he was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004.
In his remarks, Khan lashed out at Trump, saying he “sacrificed nothing.”
Trump brushed off Khan’s words in a later interview with ABC News, stating that he thinks he has made “a lot of sacrifices.” The GOP nominee also went after Ghazala Khan for not speaking during her husband’s address, suggesting that “maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.” During the speech, Ghazala Khan, donned in a headscarf, stood silently by her husband’s side.
Responding to Trump’s disparaging remarks on his wife’s silence, Khan told The Washington Post the presidential candidate’s words were “typical of a person without a soul.”
Khan said his wife didn’t speak at the convention because she is still overwhelmed by her grief and can’t even look at photos of her son without crying.
“Emotionally and physically — she just couldn’t even stand there, and when we left, as soon as we got off camera, she just broke down. And the people inside, the staff, were holding her, consoling her. She was just totally emotionally spent. Only those parents that have lost their son or daughter could imagine the pain that such a memory causes,” Khan told the paper.
On Saturday evening, Trump’s campaign issued a statement praising Captain Khan as “a hero to our country and we should honor all who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe.”
However, Khan on Saturday night rejected Trump’s late-night statement “as faked empathy.”
“What he said originally — that defines him . . . People are upset with him. He realizes, and his advisers feel that [his original statement] was a stupid mistake. That proves that this person is void of empathy. He is unfit for the stewardship of this great country. You think he will empathize with this country, with the suffering of this country’s poor people? He showed his true colors when he disrespected this country’s most honorable mother… all the snake oil he is selling, and my patriotic, decent Americans are falling for that. Republicans are falling for that,” he said.
“And I can only appeal to them. Reconsider. Repudiate. It’s a moral obligation. A person void of empathy for the people he wishes to lead cannot be trusted with that leadership. To vote is a trust. And it cannot be placed in wrong hands,” Khan said.
Trump’s criticism sparked immediate outrage on social media, including from Republicans, who criticized Trump both for attacking a mourning mother and over the perceived anti-Muslim sentiment in his comments.
In a statement that made no mention of Trump, Hillary Clinton said she was “very moved” by Ghazala Khan’s appearance.
“This is a time for all Americans to stand with the Khans and with all the families whose children have died in service to our country,” she said. “Capt. Khan and his family represent the best of America and we salute them.”
