American Muslims and the needed effectiveness:
The effective political presence of Muslim minorities in theU.S.still requires more awareness and conviction on the part of these minorities. They should be more aware of the importance of their role and more confident in their ability to influence American political decision-making.
This awareness and conviction is important to guarantee that their voices would be heard and their political, economic, social, and religious needs would be met, internally and externally, with what contributes to the achievement of their political objectives.
These political objectives include emphasizing the presence of Muslims as one of the groups that make up the American people, securing their rights in American society, enabling Muslims to live in an environment where their Islamic lifestyle and affairs are protected by the law and by the various communities of the American people.
Another political objective is proving the effectiveness and influence of Muslims in the American society by introducing the Islamic vision and solutions to the issues of influence and importance in various fields of life within American society. Add to that, Muslims aim at influencing the American organizations and institutions of decision-making in order to address Muslim issues and meet the aspirations of Muslims within American society and outside it.
The effectiveness of the political role of Muslim minorities in the American society depends on three main points.
The first point emanates from the Muslim minorities themselves in terms of their stance in terms of political participation in American society in general, their ability to build political institutions of an Islamic nature, and the availability of Islamic leadership that is capable of guiding and rationalizing the political work of Muslims in American society.
The second point stems from American society itself in terms of its vision of this role, the attitude of the American political system towards this role, as well as the attitude of the existing lobby groups in American society, and the rules and legislation that govern the political arena, not only for Muslims but for the different minorities and groups that make up the American society.
As for the third and final point, which affects the effectiveness of the political role of Muslim minorities in the United States, it stems from the surrounding regional and international environment. It represents the different effects of international and regional events, especially those related to Islamic countries or Islamic interests around the world, and its implications for the political role of Muslim minorities in American society.
The political role of Muslim minorities in American society also faces many challenges, on top of which comes the contradictions and inability to have a proper understanding of Islam and Islamic heritage, the lack of awareness among Muslims of the importance of political work, and the challenges that are facing Islamic Da‘wah efforts in the United States.
Some of these challenges are: the lack of coordination between Islamic organizations, the lack of financial resources, and the lack of political experience. Add to that, the challenges emanating from the American domestic political environment including the negative image of Islam and Muslims, the influence of the Zionist lobby, the extremism of fundamentalist Christian trends, and the violence of armed Christian militias.
