Short Description
The amazing surprise in the story of Qutuz is that he did not remain in office more than eleven months and seventeen days, i.e. less than a year.
That is the last chapter!
The amazing surprise in the story of Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, is that he did not remain in office more than eleven months and seventeen days, i.e. less than a year!
It took him less than a year to accomplish all this glorious history, perfect preparation, astounding victory, high-level upbringing, the very good outcomes and the great effects.
Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, died only fifty days after the victory of ‘Ayn Jaaloot.
As short as the period of his rule might be, he was one of the greatest men on earth.
No doubt, the value and magnificence of men is not measured by his long lifetime, his abundant property or even the splendor of authority, in so much as by the eternal deeds that change the interface of history and the geography of the world, and, at the same time, make heavier one’s weight in the Sight of Allaah, the Almighty.
Who would Qutuz be unless he adheres to the Law of Allaah, the Almighty, emerges victorious in ‘Ayn Jaaloot by virtue of his adherence to this Divine law, and commits himself to follow the Way of Allaah, the Almighty?
Who would Qutuz be if he followed a way other than this?
Without doubt, history would have overlooked his name just as it did with the names of many who were like stubble left by the torrent, and were, moreover, a curse for their peoples and nations, despite their long rule and lifetime.
There is no doubt that only great men could etch their names in the record of history, no matter how short or long they might survive.
People think that change should take a very long time; and this is why they are given to frustration. But the fact is not so. Change does not depend on time in so much as on the quality of men who could change. If such great men exist, then, the near victory and change will be possible, if not certain, Allaah Willing. But if they are absent, then, tens of years may come upon the Ummah, without moving forward even a step; on the contrary, it may move backward steps and steps.
Shaykh Al-‘Izz ibn ‘Abdul-Salaam, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, felt afraid for the Ummah after losing Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, quickly as such. He felt afraid lest this great victory would be lost, and the Ummah would break down once again. After his death, he said while weeping, “May Allaah bestow mercy upon his youth! Were he to live longer, he would have revived the youth of Islam.” But Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, revived the youth of Islam although he did not live long.
The Mamluk State continued for about three centuries to defend the Muslims and carry the flag of Islam. That is because Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, firmly fixed the strong foundation on which the others would build with well-established building; and without that foundation, in no way would the building rise.
Shaykh Al-‘Izz ibn ‘Abdul-Salaam, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said, “None has ever ruled the Muslims, after ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez, May Allaah have mercy upon him, as righteous and just as Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him.”
But let us wonder: how did Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, make all this glory?
Let us even wonder: how was Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, himself made?
Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, was made by (acting upon) the Book of Allaah, the Quran, and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
Making men is the greatest miracle of this (Islamic) religion!
Who would ‘Umar (ibn Al-Khattaab), May Allaah Be Pleased with him, be without Islam?
Who would Khaalid (ibn Al-Waleed), May Allaah Be Pleased with him, be without Islam?
Who would Taariq ibn Ziyaad, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, be without Islam?
Who would Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, be without Islam?
We have the Book (the Quran), and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, well-preserved for us by Allaah, the Almighty, until the Day of Judgment.
The Ummah will never go astray as long as it adheres to them.
In relation to this, it was narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “I have left among you two things and you will never go astray as long as you stick to them: the Book of Allaah (the Quran), and the Sunnah of His Prophet.” [Maalik: Muwatta’]
The spring of this Ummah will never get exhausted.
Allaah, the Almighty, who created for this Ummah Khaalid, Al-Qa‘qaa‘, Taariq, Salaah and Qutuz Will Continue to Create for it men who change its reality, revive its religion and youth, refresh hope among its people, and drive it to take the lead of all peoples in this world, as well as to the gardens of bliss (in Paradise).
By Allaah, in Islam, there is the honor of this World, as well as the honor of the Hereafter.
Finally:
The story of the Tatars came to an end, and the story of ‘Ayn Jaaloot also came to an end.
Both the righteous and corrupt died. The oppressing and believing soldiers died.
Years and years, centuries and centuries elapsed.
Houses, men, castles and fortresses disappeared.
Delights, griefs, laughters and tears vanished.
Everything was over, and nothing has remained but the lesson to learn.
{There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding.} [Quran 12:111]
Nothing has remained other than the statement of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, which is transmitted in a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, May Allaah Be Pleased with him: “Allaah Ensures to him who strives in His Cause and whose motivation for going out is nothing but Jihaad in His Cause and belief in His Word, to Admit him to Paradise (if martyred) or Bring him back to his dwelling place, whence he has come out, with what he gains of reward and booty." [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
What has remained is the unchangeable established Divine norm: {If Allaah Should Aid you, no one can overcome you.} [Quran 3:160]
We ask Allaah, the Almighty to make our lives be in His Way, and Make our words and state like the words and state of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, when they answered him saying: “We are those who gave the pledge to Muhammad on Jihaad as long as we live.”
I ask Allaah, the Almighty to make for us in history a lesson to learn!
