Short Description
It was the most horrible year the Muslims have ever seen from the Prophetic mission of the Messenger up to our current time.
The year 617 A.H. came, and we all belong to Allaah, and to Him we shall return.
It was the most horrible year the Muslims have ever seen from the Prophetic mission of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, up to our current time. During that year, the Tatars prevailed and transgressed unprecedentedly the Islamic countries one after another, and committed massacres, atrocities and evildoings what have never been heard of or imagined.
It is relevant to introduce those events with the words of the great scholar, Ibn Al-Atheer Al-Jazari, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, in his valuable book Al-Kaamil Fi At-Taareekh, since his words in this issue are of great importance. Of course, the one who sees the event with his own eyes is not like the one who just hears about it.
In his introduction to the story of the Tatars in the Muslim territories, Ibn Al-Atheer, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, says:
"For many years, I have avoided mentioning that event, for I regarded it too grievous, and disliked to remember at all. Indeed, I have been quite reluctant. Who could easily dare to write about the obituary of Islam and Muslims? Would that my mother did not give birth to me; and would that I died before this, and were in oblivion, forgotten. But some friends urged me to write it down, and it seemed to me that it was of no avail to refrain from writing it.
Being so, we say that in this chapter we shall mention the greater event and the larger calamity the like of which has never taken place throughout the days, whose evil extended over all creatures in general, and the Muslims in particular. If one says that the entire world, since Allaah the Almighty created Aadam (Adam) has never been stricken by the like of it, he indeed has told the truth. The history of all the people has nothing similar, or even close to it. The greatest event they mention is the atrocities committed by Nebuchadnezzar against the children of Israel, of killing and destroying Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).
But even, Bayt Al-Maqdis is too small in size and area to compare with the territories ruined by those accursed Tatars, each city of which is many times the like of Bayt Al-Maqdis (in area and population); and the children of Israel themselves are too small in number to compare with the great multitudes who were killed: the inhabitants of one city who were killed were greater in number than the children of Israel altogether.
May be the people would never see the like of this event until the creatures are extinct and the entire world comes to an end, save Gog and Magog. As for the antichrist, he would save the lives of his followers and kill only his opponents. Therefore, the Tatars saved no life at all; they killed women, men and children, split open the bellies of the pregnant and killed the fetuses inside them; we all belong to Allaah, and to Him we shall return; and there is no power and no strength save in Allaah, the Most High, the Most Great, for this event, whose evil has become widespread, and harm general, and broadly circulated from one country to another, like a cloud carried by the wind."
This was written by Ibn Al-Atheer, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, as an introduction to a long speech, overflowing with grief and pain, anxiety and apprehension. How calamitous this catastrophe upon the Islamic world was by all measures: the measures of the past, the present and even the future. This adversity was indeed greater than a lot of adversities that befell the Muslims throughout all times.
