INTRODUCTION
Since Mongke Khan reigned the Tatars, he started to think about how to overthrow the Abbasid Caliphate and then invade Iraq, followed by Shaam and Egypt. It is true that Mongke Khan was a strong firm leader, but he was mainly helped by his three brothers to realize his dreams. One of them, Arik Boke, stayed with him in Karakorum, the Mongolian capital, to help him administer this vast empire. Kublai Khan, the second brother, was entrusted the management of the Eastern regions, including China, Korea and their surrounding territories.
Hulagu Khan, the third brother, became in charge of administering the Ilkhanate of Persia and its surrounding areas, which brought him face to face with the Islamic caliphate. There is no doubt that all people have heard about Hulagu. Hulagu was the Tatarian anti-humanistic slaying leader, whose thirst was quenched by nothing other than the human blood, just like his predecessor, Genghis Khan, May Allaah curse them both. Hulagu was one of the most odious personalities on earth.
As he was entrusted to be in charge of the Ilkhanate of Persia, his work area was the Islamic countries, and this means that the greater quantity of the blood he shed was that of Muslims and that the hearts of Muslims received the greatest share of the pain he caused to humans. Exalted be Allaah! It seems as if the resentment Hulagu had was not sufficient to ruin the entire earth that he married a woman who was like him in resentment, onslaught and injustice. He married the Mongolian princess Doquz Khatun, a strong woman of great influence on the Mongolian state, who converted to Christianity and became extremely fanatical about her religion, and, in return, had a strong aversion to Islam.
In this way, Hulagu and his wife Doquz Khatun gathered together to vent their severe anger on the Islamic Ummah. Hulagu had a clear aim; that was obviously to overthrow Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, and then go further.
Since Hulagu took the reins of the leadership of Persia, he started to prepare to overthrow the Abbasid Caliphate. Indeed, as much as his preparation was amazing and enormous, the reaction of Muslims to it was trivial and insignificant. Being so, it was fitting for Hulagu to conquer his opponents, even if they were Muslims. That is because the established Norms of Allaah, the Almighty, on earth are unchangeable; whoever utilizes all available means of victory, will be given victory by Allaah, the Almighty, even though he is a disbeliever; and whoever does not get ready for the day of meeting should be defeated, even though he is a Muslim as Allaah Says (what means): {Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully Repay them for their deeds therein, and they therein will not be deprived.} [Quran 11:15]
Hulagu, thus, desired the life of this world and prepared himself well for it; thereupon he got his share of it, and was not deprived of anything thereof in the least.
