Short Description
On the other hand, Qutuz knew well the advantages of waiting for the Tatar army in Egypt. What was it?
On the other hand, Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, knew well the advantages of waiting for the Tatar army in Egypt. The movement of the Tatar army from Palestine to Egypt would, without doubt, prolong their line of supplies and transportation, cut them from their bastions, and force them to cross the vast desert of Sinai, which is destructive for the army that does not know its ways and paths. Furthermore, to wait for the Tatars in Egypt would relieve the Egyptian army of crossing the vast desert of Sinai, and save the power of the army.
However, to compare the advantages of waiting for the Tatars in Egypt, with those of moving the battlefield to Palestine made the case clear in the mind of Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him. In addition to the five reasons mentioned above, which supported the movement of the battlefield to Palestine, he knew well that the Tatar forces proved highly competent in crossing the difficult natural obstacles.
The Tatars usually used some Muslims who sought hasty wealth or were desirous for authority and safety; and those, without doubt, would guide them to the shortest and safest way to Egypt. Thus, the Tatar army was expected to cross the desert of Sinai. Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, also was assured about his army, and confident of its capability of movement, and competence in training, and knew that it would be possible, and even easy, Allaah willing, for it to move to Palestine across the Sinai.
Thus, the suggestion of moving the battlefield to Palestine overweighed, and the attendees in the supreme military council held by Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, were satisfied with his successful opinion. Qutuz, May Allaah have mercy upon him, then started to prepare his army and make it ready to cross Sinai and meet the Tatars.
