Short Description
Isaiah 42:11: “Let the desert and its cities shout out, the towns where the nomads of Kedar live! Let the residents of Sela shout joyfully".
“Let the desert and its cities shout out, the towns where the nomads of Kedar[1] live! Let the residents of Sela shout joyfully; let them shout loudly from the mountaintops.” [Isaiah 42:11]
In this text, there is clear glad news about Muhammad [peace be upon him]. It refers to the Arab land where Kedar, the son of Ishmael, lived and asked it to rejoice. The text did not only refer to Kedar, the son of Ishmael and the grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him][2], but also mentioned the abode of emigration of The Messenger of Allâh [peace be upon him] (i.e. Madînah): “Let the residents of Sela shout joyfully.” Sela, in Hebrew[3], is the mountain of Sala‘, which is at the entrance of Madînah.
The previous text gives us an idea, through reflection and contemplation, about the reason why the Jews established themselves in Madînah and its vicinities having been certain that the last Prophet would live in Madînah, one of whose signs is the mountain of Sala‘ (i.e. Sela) as mentioned in the Torah. Just like in the previous glad tidings, they wished that this Prophet be from among them given that they, more often, threatened the Aws and Khazraj (tribes) with the last Prophet who would come from among them, and exterminate them (i.e. Arabs) and their likes.
The Jews in Madînah and its vicinities knew well the characteristics and near emergence of the Prophet [peace be upon him]. This was confirmed by ibn Sa‘d in his Tabaqât through a contiguous chain of narrators on the authority of ibn ‘Abbâs [may Allâh be pleased with them] in which he said: “The Jews of Quraythah, An-Nadhîr, Fadak and Khaybar learnt the characteristics of the Prophet [peace be upon him] before his Prophetic mission and knew that his place of emigration would be Madînah.”[4] Indeed, that is a clear proof from the Torah and a historical reality for the glad tidings of the last Prophet, Muhammad [peace be upon him].
[1] The son of the Prophet Ishmael [peace be upon him].
