Witr prayer had a particular significance to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the extent that he advised his companions to particularly observe it. Bukhari related that Abu-Hurairah, May Allah be pleased with him, said: (My intimate friend advised me to observe three things: to fast three days a month, to pray two Rak`ah in forenoon, and to pray Witr before sleep). Also, the Prophet advised Abu-Ad-dardaa the same advice where he said: my intimate friend advised me to observe three things, and i will never abandon them so long as i am alive: (to fast three days a month, to pray two Rak`ah in forenoon, and to pray Witr before sleep).
Witr prayer shall be performed after night prayer for the Hadith narrated in Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of `Abdullah ibn `Umar that a man asked the Prophet: O Messenger of Allah! how to pray night prayer? The Prophet replied: Two by two, but if you feared that morning is imminent, then pray one Rak`ah as Witr).
Also, Bukhari and Muslim related on the authority of `Abdullah ibn `Umar that the Prophet said: let Witr be the last of your prayer at night.
Witr may be done before sleep or after wake up, the Prophet asked Abu-Bakr: when do you pray Witr? Abu-Bakr replied: i pray Witr before i sleep. The Prophet asked `Umar: when do you pray Witr? `Umar replied: i sleep, then wake and pray Witr. The Prophet said to Abu-Bakr: you seek caution, and said to `Umar: you seek resolution.
It is a must that Witr be prayed before Fajr prayer as the Prophet (PBUH) said: pray Witr before Fajr prayer.
The companions of the Prophet were contantly dedicated to Witr prayer, which is reflected in the words of `Ali, May Allah be pleased with him, who said: Witr is not obligatory as your Fard prayers, however, the Prophet said: Allah is one, so pray Witr, O people of Qur`an!
