Islam urges Muslim to appreciate the blessings of Allah even if others disparage it. It was the sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) not to leave remnants at the bowl lest it may be thrown to garbage, while so many people are in lack to food and drink somewhere. Accordingly, the Prophet (PBUH) urged us to wipe the bowl thoroughly after finishing eating and leave no remnant at them. In this regard, Imam Muslim related on the authority of Anas that the Prophet (PBUH) said: (If anyone of you drops a morsel of food, he should remove any dirt that may have stuck on it and then eat it, and should not leave it for Satan.) He (PBUH) also commanded us that we should glean the pot, saying, "You do not know in which part of your food the blessings lies.)
The Prophet (PBUH) mentioned two advantages for licking the bowl; first, it prevents satan from eating the remnants of our food which may strengthen him; second, it offers us the full blessings as it hides somewhere we do not know exactly. The Hadith teaches us that we should not fill our bowls with food beyond our need, and this is definitely the most perfect way.
