It is never easy to do justice to any topic pertaining to the Prophet (SAWS) for his noble stances are numerous that it is almost impossible to report them all. However, with the help of Allah (SWT) we will try to do our best.
But before we discuss mercy in the life of the Prophet (SAWS), we must talk about him as a person first. I am positive that no man in the history of mankind and until the day of judgment received, and will continue to receive, the love, appreciation, and utmost respect as the Prophet (SAWS).
In order to bring goodness to this world, it is imperative to study the Prophet’s life. We are not discussing a regular personality nor an exceptional or random experiment. We are discussing the greatest and most influential person ever created without a shred doubt, and hence we are studying the most noble of life stories. Our discussion will not be emotional nor devoid of proof, on the contrary, proof will be provided by both non-Muslims and Muslims.
The life of the Prophet (SAWS) is a true model to be followed by individuals, groups, teams, communities and nations. With the divine instructions revealed to him, the Prophet (SAWS) was able to build a nation from nothing and unite Arabs and non-Arabs on one religion and one principle. The Prophet (SAWS) was able to build a nation that time can not produce the like of. The changes he brought to the world were outstanding, and hence the study of his life is not only recommended but is essentially required on all Muslims who want salvation in this life and the hereafter, as well as dignity and pride for their nation. Non-Muslims worldwide ought to study the Prophet’s life as well. Mankind stands to lose enormously by not studying the magnificent life of the last Prophet (SAWS). His actions, sayings and guiding wisdom are a treasure for every truth and reformation seeker.
The Prophet (SAWS) was sent to a fighting and disunited nation where injustice prevailed while corruption and evil had many faces. The Prophet (SAWS) in admirable patience and perseverance began changing the society, fixing characters, and guiding people to the right path. He called for all that is good and wholesome and warned against all that is evil and corrupt. The path was not smooth but filled with obstacles and opponents. Many fought him, including his own clan, yet this did not deter him nor weaken his will. The Prophet (SAWS) built a solid nation with a steady and clear direction. Anyone who is true to his people and religion can effectively mirror his approach and use him as a role model. The Prophet (SAWS), says, “I have left you with a clear path; whoever strays away from it after my time is surely ruined.”
The Prophet (SAWS) was a truly impressive character, and he continued to impress everyone around him until the day he died. Truly an amazing feat, one that can only be explained by his Prophethood. As a Prophet, he was not affected by Satan. Furthermore, he was faultless and impervious to all temptations.
Not only was he a Prophet, but also a head of state and a true leader at the same time. Despite his noble position, he lived amongst his companions and followers. He did not require special food, favorable housing or any wealth. He underwent the same hardships with the rest of the Muslims. He suffered more than they did from hunger. He fought with them, immigrated with them and was besieged with them. He was closer to enemy lines during battles than most Muslims. He never abandoned a battle. The more he suffered the more patient he became. He became more tolerant with additional abuse. He was never angered for his own sake and never avenged himself.
Muhammad (SAWS) was a very generous man who never turned anyone down. He was the head of state yet all that he had was spent for the sake of Allah (SWT). He gave away to charity as if he never feared poverty. When he passed away, his shield was held by a Jew for 30 ounces of wheat. Despite being a head of state that encompassed all of the Arab Peninsula, he did not leave any money behind to his family when he died. He was never known to keep anything for himself neither did his companions and followers.
He intermingled with his people and never isolated himself from them. He sat with the poor, showed mercy to the weak and would follow a slave-girl in the streets of Madinah to wherever she asked him to. He visited the sick, attended funerals, gave Friday sermons and held lectures. He visited his companions in their homes and they visited him in return. Through all of his activities and duties, he always maintained a cheerful smile on his face.
He was truly merciful towards his ummah (Muslim nation); whenever he was given the choice between two matters, he chose the easy one as long as it was not forbidden. Meanwhile, he was the furthest from anything forbidden. He constantly forgave everyone, even those who were unkind to him. He always visited his family members including those who severed their ties with him.
For those unique qualities and considerate characteristics, his companions loved him like they never loved anyone before. His own enemies noticed how much his companions loved him and said, “We never saw anyone loved by his friends as Muhammad is loved by his companions.”
The actually loved him more than their love for their parents, spouses, clans, money and homeland. Companions put themselves in front of him during battles to receive arrows aiming at him. They acted as human shields. They were willing to sacrifice themselves so that the Prophet (SAWS) does not get slightly hurt.
They truly loved him and could not stand being away from him for long. Whenever a companion goes home they would run to the mosque to gloriously bask in the presence of the Prophet (SAWS). Some of the companions even cried whenever they thought of parting ways with him on the day of judgment and in paradise due to his high and noble rank. They were only relieved when the Prophet (SAWS) assured them that people are sent to paradise with those they love.
His greatness was not only in his dealings with people or in his kind manners, but he was a superb politician and a wise leader. He was an impeccable lecturer; full of wisdom and able to convey the utmost meaning with a few words. Many intellectuals and scholars have spent decades deriving great meanings and implications from few of his words. He was excellent in debates and was a superb negotiators; who would never give up or get angry. He constantly sought his companions’ opinions and advice although he is by far more knowledgeable and rightly guided than they are. He never put down an opinion or belittled anyone. Wisdom was his goal and he sought it everywhere as long as it was within the boundaries of Islamic law.
The pinnacle of his greatness is the fact that he was characterized by all the above amazing qualities through out all his life and in every situation. We learn of those traits and characteristics while he was in Makkah and Madinah, during peace and at war, while he was persecuted and as the head of state. We saw the same characteristics in his dealings with his fiercest enemies and with his best friends and companions.
He never lost his mind no matter how tough the situation was, and he was never unjust to anyone even his enemies. He did not do anything that could incite remorse and he never shied from saying: I do not know.
His entire life was a pure and pleasant vision which impressed his enemies and generated admiration, respect, and love from masses of people, many of whom are not Muslim.
The prominent French poet LaMartaine says, “Who dares to compare any man to Muhammad? Who appeared who is greater than him while considering all the criteria for measuring the greatness of man? The most spectacular event in my life is my careful study of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) and recognizing the eternity and greatness in it. ”
The famous German poet Goethe says, “I searched history for the highest role model for man, and I found it in the Arab Prophet Muhammad. ”
This is our Prophet (SAWS), a pride to us and all of mankind. The above are not the only testaments on him, there are many more which we will list at the end of the research paper.
