Short Description
The kindness of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with Suhail ibn `Amr
Suhail ibn `Amr was a prominent head in Quraish, however, in Mecca. He was a head of bad history with the prophet Muhammad. He was aged having lots of progeny. Most of them joined the Muslim army as Muslims and coming in the opening of Mecca. Suhail, found no refuge among his company heads of Quraish who all fled. Suhail fled home and sent to his son `Abdullah. Suhail said to his son, O `Abdulla! Seek Muhammad's protection for me as I fear I might be killed as there is no body treated Muhammad offensively than I did in Al-Hudaybia, Badr and Uhud.
Indeed, Suhail, for long time, deterred people from Islam and he was very severe and stubborn on the day of Hudaybiah. Moreover, he refused his son joins the party of Muslims though the prophet interceded for him more than once. Now, Suhai faces critical significant situation to the extent he may lose his life, the matter which made him not hesitate to ask his son to seek the prophet's protection.
It is obvious, how is the inner feeling for a prominent head like Suhail!
Suhail narrates: `Abdullah ibn Suhail went to the prophet and said: O Messenger of Allah! I seek your protection for my father. The prophet resolutely replied: let him appear, he is secured with Allah's protection!
Let's draw comparison between the prophet's attitude towards the leading heads of Mecca and the attitude of any state occupying another one!!
It is well known that the leading figures of the occupied country face killing, exile or imprison for long periods, not to mention the extent of insults they are treated with. On the other hand, the prophet Muhammad not only gives protection to the foe heads, however, he prompts all Muslim to deal kindly and do not hurt their feelings even by word or glance. The prophet said to his companions: (Let not any one of you looks askance at Suhail ibn `Amr!!)
Moreover, the prophet praised Suhail saying to his companions: (By Allah! Suhial is a wise and noble man that it is not for a man like him to fail to know Islam. The prophet continued: Suhail is now quite sure that his previous attitude will no longer avail him).
Great words of the prophet Muhammad need not to illustration!
Upon that, `Abdullah hastened to his father telling him the pardon of the prophet. `Abdullah mentioned the praise of the prophet to his father Suhail who in turn said: indeed, Muhammad is dutiful in his youth and oldness!!
Suhail ibn `Amr headed to the prophet and embraced Islam, the day which was a turning point in his life. Narrators relate that Suhail was dedicated to prayer, fasting and charity. Moreover, Suhail went out to strive in the cause of Allah, however, he was the leader of a troop of Muslims in Yarmouk battle.
Let's contemplate on the wonderful attitude of the prophet towards his foes and how he altered them to a course never imagined. This is obtained only by magnanimity and overlooking the spites and grudges.
The kindness of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with Fudalah ibn `Umair
Fudalah was a fierce foe to the prophet Muhammad to the extent that he tried to kill him in the day of opening Mecca. How dangerous is that! The prophet is surrounded by a massive army amounts to 10 thousands of the companions that if Fudala insisted on implement his will, he would certainly be killd. Despite this, rancor made him blind and decided to kill the prophet even if he sacrificed his soul.
Fudalah put the hided the sword under his clothes and passed behind the prophet while performing circumambulation around Ka`ba. Fudalah approached the prophet who said: O Fudalah! Is that you? Fudalah replied: Yes, Messenger of Allah, it is me (Fudalah pretended he is a Muslim at that time). The prophet said: what were you intending to do? Fudalah replied: no thing, just I was busy remembrance of Allah, Almighty. The prophet laughed and said: O Fudalah! Seek Allah's forgiveness. Then, the prophet put his hand on the chest of Fudalah. Afterwards, Fudalah is reported: By Allah! It was just the prophet raised his hand from my chest and I felt that no body is dearer to me than the prophet (PBUH).
This was the attitude of the prophet Muhammad towards a man not only planned to kill him, but he acted upon that and hided the sword approaching the prophet to kill him, however; Allah's protection surround his messenger.
The kindness of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with Hind bint `Utbah
The prophetic attitude with Hind bint `Utbah is not less significant than the previous ones.
Hind bint `Utbah has confronted Islam for long years and she had bad commemorations in the minds of Muslims, rather; the prophet personally.
Hind is the wife of Abu-Sufyan and the daughter of `Utbah ibn Rabi`ah, the Qurashi prominent leader. She always kept very rancor for Muslims from the very days of Islam and doubled after the battle of Badr wherein her father `Utbad, her uncle Shaibah, her son hanzalah and her brother Al-Walid were all died. Such are the dearest relatives to her who were all chiefs in Quraish. This matter left her heart rancorous incomparably. This rancor continued from the day of Badr till the day of opening Mecca.
Hind went out with the army of Quraish in Uhud prompting them to her utmost to eradicate Muslims. When her army fled away from Muslims at the beginning of the battle, she began pouring dust upon them prompting them to continue fighting. On that day, she has not fled like the men did. At the end of the battle when the disbelievers won Muslims, Hind committed a very repugnant act. She began maiming the corpses of Muslims one by one. She was cutting ears and noses. She approached Hamzah ibn `Andil-Muttalib and split open his interior, she pulled out his liver and, out of rancor, she masticated it, but she spit it out as it tasted unpleasant to her.
This attitude of Hind affected the prophet too much and left him distressed.
In this respect, Abu-Hurairah related that the prophet stood at Hamzah mutilated, upon that, we noticed him too depressed that never seen before. The prophet said: (May Allah be merciful with you, my uncle. Indeed, you were maintainer to the ties of kinship and always doing the good).
Depend upon that, the one may imagine how angry the prophet was towards Hind!
Moreover, Hind went out with the disbelievers in Al-Ahzab battle and continued confronting Islam shortly before the opening of Mecca, even she refuse her husband attitude when he asked the people of Mecca to enter their homes seeking the protection of the prophet. Besides, she prompted people of Mecca to kill her husband as he acted submissively to the prophet.
It is a very fierce long bad history for Hind wit Muslims.
After this long course confrontation of the Islamic call, the prophet opened Mecca and thus its people came from everywhere paying homage to Islam.
Hind bint `Utbah came while completely veiled and not identified wishing to pay homage to Islam as its people did.
The homage paid to women was rather different from that of men.
The homage of women was to abstain from polytheism, theft, fornication/ adultry, killing their children, not uttering slander, intentionally forging falsehood (i.e. by making illegal children belonging to their husbands), and disobeying the prophet in what is right.
The one contemplating on the incidents of Hind would clearly be convinced that she is coming only seeking protection from being killed.
However; it was not expected! How was the attitude of the prophet?!
Women started homage which was conducted as follows.
The prophet said: O women! Pay homage not to ascribe partners to Allah, Almighty.
Hind, completely veiled and the prophet has not identified her, said: By Allah, you ask women for things different from men, Hind meant that the homage of men was abridged, but the homage of women is detailed.
The prophet did not pay attention and continued: and do not steal.
Hind stood up and said: O Allah's messenger! My husband, Sufyan is a stingy man that he does not supply me and his children the sufficient provision. So, am I sinful if I took from his wealth a sufficient provision informing him not of that?
The prophet replied: take the sufficient provision for you and your children customarily.
Upon that the prophet paid attention and said: is it you Hind bint `Utbah?! She replied: yes, it is me, Hind. forgive me! May Allah forgive you!
Indeed, it is a crucial moment in the life of Hind.
What is your opinion? What is the prophet going to act? Bearing in mind her long history confronting Muslims and mutilation of his uncle Hamzah?!
As usual, the prophet pardoned her and gave no word reflecting his depression, rather; he waived all his rights and simply accepted her Islam and went on paying homage to women as if not depressed at all!!
The prophet said: and do not commit fornication/ adultery.
Hind continued wondering: does the haughty woman commit fornication?!
The prophet paid no attention and continued: and do not kill your children.
Hind, once again, interrupted the course of homage. She said: we raised them when children and you killed them when adult. Have you left behind any man of ours save be killed by you?! You have killed their fathers on the Day of Badr and instructing us concerning their children right now!!
Upon that, the prophet did not become angry with her, neither did he say: why we killed them on the Day of Badr?! Have not the polytheists, your father, son, brother and uncle, confronted us day and night to turn away from Islam?! Have not they persecuted and tortured us?! Have not they confiscated our homes and properties?!
The prophet has not pronounced any of that, however; his reaction was astonishing!!
The prophet smiled and commented with no word.
The prophet acted simply and appreciated the question of Hind and the how difficult is Islam for her.
The prophet continued: do not utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood (i.e. by making illegal children belonging to their husbands).
Hind, again, said: By Allah! How abominable to do that!
The prophet continued: do not disobey me in what is right.
Hind said: by Allah! We came not to you while intending to disobey you in what is right.
In this manner, all women of Mecca, including Hind, paid homage to the prophet.
Glory be to Allah, Almighty, who frequently alter the conditions of hearts!
Hind acted very well after embracing Islam.
She began going out with the Muslim armies prompting them on fighting, exactly as she used to do with the disbeliever armies. In this connection, she was a factor of victory of Muslims over 200 thousands of Romans in the Battle of Yarmuk.
Hind bint `Utbah made many advantages to the Muslim nation by virtue of the wonderful attitude of the prophet Muhammad towards her.
How many were those foes of the prophet Muhammad who turned to be his allies by virtue of his attitudes!!
