Short Description
To restore the blessing
Of the most important advantages the believer accomplishes when afflicted by a disaster is that he hold himself answerable. Though trials elevate the degree of the afflicted, however, they may occur as a result of heart fault on part of the believer, so that Allah afflicts him.
In this regard, Allah referred to this type in the Quran several times, after the calamity in the battle of Uhud, Allah revealed: (Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uúud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.), Al-`Imran, 165, and generally in the chapter of Ash-Shura-30, Allah says: (And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.)
This is not general and absolute, as afflictions are not always by way of faults of people, but they should be viewed as a chance for the one to hold himself accountable.
Let us all ask ourselves: why Allah has deprived us of a blessing was given to us?
It may be an affliction to elevate our degrees and to choose martyrs, this is great and we ask Allah to keep us steadfast on this affliction. However, on the other hand, this affliction may be because of heart faults. Allah says: (That is because Allah would not change a blessing which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.) Al-Anfal- 53. Allah Almighty has bestowed a great blessing on us that we never expected, but Allah changed this blessing, and stripped us of it, then He (SWT) passed it to others. For astonishment, the blessing was stripped from the reformers and was passed to the corrupters! Why this happened? This is indicated in the Quranic verse: (That is because Allah would not change a blessing which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves)
What things have been changed inside our hearts?
It might be that the love for the wordy life leaked into our hearts, and this is not strange or rare thing, since it leaked into the hearts of some of the Prophet's companion at the battle of Uhud, which is indicated in the Quranic verse: (of you are those who want the worldly life, and of you are those who want the hereafter), Al-`Imran, 152.
Self-conceit might have leaked into our hearts, namely we believed that our genius preparation of us, as humans, is the only means to victory and empowerment.
We might felt arrogant over people and belittled their opinions and views in comparison to ours.
We might have been satisfied with our views though we are mistaken, and do not want to admit it.
We might have been in dispute and conflict within each other as brothers in Islam.
We might have been fallen in fear to declare we are soldiers of Allah and aspire to implement His laws on earth in the first place, and do not mainly concern for food and the worldly pleasures.
We might aspired to please people even if contradicting to Allah's pleasure, namely approving things running counter to Shariah to avoid the displeasure of people using as an excuse the importance of graduation principle, or approaching people within their mental capabilities, though such people do not aspire to the hereafter inasmuch as aspire to the worldly life.
We might have let down some Muslims who expected our support and help, but we disappointed them.
We might have accepted loyalty to some people who slaughter our Muslim fellows and assault the Muslim women in order to gain their economic support or else.
All these things or some of them might have leaked into our hearts.
Therefore, if one of these aforementioned occurred, Allah Almighty changed the blessing .
Some of the readers to this article might say: nothing of these have leaked into our hearts, however, we are sincere to Allah Almighty.
I respond to him saying: I believe you concerning your own heart, but how about the hearts of others?
Do you judge others of the leaders of the Islamic movement based on their apparent figures?
The prominent believers could not judge other companions living with them, as what is inside hearts is a secret only known by Allah. To demonstrate, `Abdullah in Mas`ud, after the battle of Uhud said: I have never imagined that any of the companions loves the worldly life until it was the battle of Uhud and Allah revealed the Quranic verse: (of you are those who want the worldly life, and of you are those who want the hereafter), Al-`Imran, 152[1].
Even `Abdullah ibn Mas`ud could not know the hidden content in the hearts of the other companions whom he has associated with them for long time.
Also, we do not talk about heart fault inflicted the whole, however, some of us, yet, it was the reason behind calamity inflicted all. It is the same case which happened in Uhud battle, when 40 archers left the mountain, while the others remained there. The companions fought fiercely, while some of them fled away the battlefield. Are any of you knowing the names of the archers who left the mountain or those who fled away the battlefield?
We do not know most of them. The love for worldly life leaked into their hearts, so the whole paid the price, though the gains they got were not to the extent that cause them to leave Jihad or turn them away from assuming the concerns of the Muslim nation that they all went out to Uhud battle, though they know that they may do not return homes, rather they fought for midday courageously until the sign of victory appeared, however the calamity inflicted the Muslims when the worldly life leaked to their hearts.
One may wonder: what is the guilt of those who have not disobeyed?
I respond to you saying: his guilt is that he has not paid intention through the whole previous year, from Badr to Uhud, to the heart fault of his fellow companions. Perhaps some of the companions paid attention to others' world but not Hereafter, thus the heart diseases leaked into their hearts, and consequently Allah stripped them of the blessing .
What is the way out?
Complete surrender to Allah with hearts full of faith to restore the blessing of Allah (O Prophet, say to whoever is in your hands of the captives, "If Allah knows [any] good in your hearts, He will give you [something] better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."), Al-Anfal-70
If this is the case with the polytheist captives, it is more adequate with the believers and reformers. If Allah knows any good in our hearts, then Allah will not only restore His blessing to us, rather He (SWT) will give us much better, namely if we aspire to establish an Islamic state, Allah would give us the caliphate, and if we aspire to effectuate the rules of Shariah in ten years, Allah would facilitate it in just one year, and if we aspire to eliminate tens of the corrupters, Allah would make it accessible to eliminate hundreds and thousands of such corrupters.
The universe, earth, and people do belong to Allah, and none will come out of the fate of Allah. O Allah! Make our hearts steadfast to faith, and guide us to the right path, Amen.
Anas ibn Malik said: the Prophet (PBUH) used to say: O Allah! You change hearts, make my heart steadfast to Your religion. I said: O Messenger of Allah! We believed in you and in what you brought, yet you are worried about us?. The Messenger replied: (Verily, (men’s) hearts are within God’s two fingers, changing them (as He wishes)[2].)
It is merely a heart question, and our defeats are not by reason of the mighty of our enemy, rather because of the weakness of our hearts, so let the Islamic state be established inside your hearts, so that it will be established on our lands.
We ask Allah to grant glory to Islam and Muslims.
