Short Description
Sunnah
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has been used to many deeds before sleeping. It seemed as if he desired to gain more rewards before the day is finished. Of these deeds were Tasbeeh, (i.e. Glorified be Allah), Hamd, (i.e. all the praises are for Allah), Takbeer, (i.e. Allah is Greater).
It is narrated in Bukhari that Fatimah, May Allah be pleased with her, complained of what she suffered from the hand mill and from grinding, when she got the news that some slave girls of the booty had been brought to Allah's Apostle. She went to him to ask for a maid-servant, but she could not find him, and told `Aisha of her need. When the Prophet came, Aisha informed him of that. The Prophet came to our house when we had gone to our beds. (On seeing the Prophet) we were going to get up, but he said, 'Keep at your places,' I felt the coolness of the Prophet's feet on my chest. Then he said, "Shall I tell you a thing which is better than what you asked me for? When you go to your beds, say: 'Allahu Akbar (i.e. Allah is Greater)' for 34 times, and 'Al hamdu Li l-lah (i.e. all the praises are for Allah)' for 33 times, and Subhan Allah (i.e. Glorified be Allah) for 33 times. This is better for you than what you have requested."
The Hadith may denote that Allah Almighty would give them power to undertake their tasks without hardships if they invoked Allah in the words mentioned in the Hadith, or the case might be that the Prophet wanted to pay the attention of his daughter Fatimah to the Hereafter more than this world life, which is achieved by invocation more than servant.
At another occasion in At-Tirmidhi, deemed Sahih by Al-Albani, the Prophet (PBUH) said: (When you go to bed, say: Glorified be Allah, Allah is Greater, and all the praises are for Allah as they count for one hundred by tongue and one thousand in balance.)
I personally consider more probable that invocation achieves both, strength to undertake our tasks in this life and a reward in the afterlife.
How great is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)! It takes no more than few minutes to observe it.
