Short Description
Fasting is one of the best means to achieve piety where Almighty Allah says: (O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous), Al-Baqarah, 183, so Prophet Muhammad was not limited to fasting Ramadan only; rather it was his sunnah to fast many other days throughout the year, like fasting on Mondays and Thursdays. In this connection, ibn Majah, Al-Albani ranked it authentic, reported on the authority of Abu-Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, pbuh, used to fast Mondays and Thursdays, he was asked about that fasting, and he replied: on Mondays and Thursdays Allah Almighty forgive every Muslim except those in dispute that Allah says: delay forgiveness for these until they reconcile)
At another occasion, the Prophet mentioned another virtue for fasting on Mondays and Thursdays where Muslim reported on the authority of Abu-Hurairah that the Prophet, pbuh, said: (gates of paradise are opened on Mondays and Thursdays and Allah therein forgives every Servant who is not a polytheist except a Muslim in dispute with another, so Allah says: respite these until they reconcile, respite these until they reconcile, respite these until they reconcile.)
Sometimes, the Prophet made it to fast three days of the month in coincide with Mondays and Thursdays, Abu-Dawud related, Al-Albani ranked it good, on the authority of Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: (the Prophet was to fast three days a month; Monday, Thursday, and Monday of the following week)
If you missed fasting on Thursdays, let not fasting on Mondays because the Prophet was keen to fast it more than Monday, where Muslim reported on the authority of Qatadah Al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, pbuh, was asked about fasting on Mondays and he explained: (I was born on Monday and revelation of Quran was therein)
Therefore, we must seek piety through this great act, namely fasting on Mondays and Thursdays.
