Short Description
Some Muslims believe that Allah’s satisfaction during the month of Ramadan for His servants is merely for those abstaining from food and beverages from dawn to sunset. However, it is a fact that fasting is a comprehensive worship based on manners and principles which should be observed, and those not observing them are torturing themselves by hunger and thirst and had no reward for fasting.
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“There are people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger, and there are those who pray and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless night.”, narrated by ibn Majah, and ranked good and authentic by Al-Albani.
Almighty Allah prescribed fasting for Muslims to fulfill the utmost of manners and insight, namely to observe piety which is plainly stated in the Quran where Allah says: (O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous), Al-Baqarah, 183.
Accordingly, a fasting Muslim from food and beverages while indulged in other forms of disobedience shall gain no reward for such fasting. In this concern, it is narrated by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) who reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If one does not eschew lies and false conduct, Allah has no need that he should abstain from his food and his drink."
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) also reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: 'Every act of the son of Adam is for him, except As-Siyam (the fasting) which is (exclusively) for Me, and I will reward him for it.' Fasting is a shield. When anyone of you is observing fast, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice; and if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hand the soul of Muhammad is, the breath of one observing Saum is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. The one who fasts, experiences two joys: he feels pleasure when he breaks the fast. He is joyful by virtue of his fast when he meets his Rubb."
