Short Description
Some Muslims believe that they attain the status of wassil, namely those maintaining relatives ties through keeping good ties with their relatives they are in good terms with, and they think it is normal to sever ties with relatives who initiated bad terms with them. However, in fact, this is counter to the proper understanding of our religion. Abdullah bin 'Amr Al-'as reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The person who perfectly maintains the ties of kinship is not the one who does it because he gets recompensed by his relatives (for being kind and good to them), but the one who truly maintains the bonds of kinship is the one who persists in doing so even though the latter has severed the ties of kinship with him". [Al-Bukhari].
A practical sample for this is the narration of Abu Huraira who reported that a person said: O Allah's Messenger!, I have relatives with whom I try, to have close relationship, but they sever (this relation). I treat them well, but they treat me ill. I am sweet to them but they are harsh towards me. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: If it is so as you say, then you in fact throw hot ashes (upon their faces) and there would always remain with you on behalf of Allah (an Angel to support you) who would keep you dominant over them so long as you adhere to this (path of righteousness).
