Do you have plans to do Hajj this year? There is a great reward waiting for you if you are careful enough about your behavior during the journey:
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say,
"Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or transgression, shall return [free from sins] as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him." (Al-Bukhari)
Dhikr: The Precious Words
Reading the sections about Dhikr and remembering Allah in hadith books, you can recognize the especially great virtue and reward assigned to these few words. The "prize" for some of these Adhkar is no less than getting Allah's forgiveness. It is really strange how many of us neglect this real opportunity.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who says Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise) one hundred times a day, his sins will be obliterated even if they are equal to the extent of the foam of the sea. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Zaid ibn Harithah narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whosoever says:
'Astaghfirullaha al-`Azeem al-ladhi la ilaha illa howa Al-Hayy al-Qayyum wa atubu illayh
I ask forgiveness of Allah, the Magnificent, than Whom there is no deity, the Living, the Sustainer of existence, and I turn to Him in repentance,'
his sins will be forgiven even if he should have run away from the battlefield (while he was engaged in fighting for the Cause of Allah, which is a grave sin in Islam). (Abu Dawud and authenticated by Al-Albani)
Ramadan Specials
Being a special month, Ramadan comes with its own special package of forgiveness opportunities.
Now, since the month has already passed, if you have been blessed with a good performance in Ramadan and have already made use of Ramadan’s ‘special offers’, listed below, then you certainly would love to keep your record clean throughout the rest of the year by taking advantage of the other forgiveness means mentioned in this series.
On the other hand, if you were not attentive enough to these special offers, it is not too late to have your sins erased. Make use of the tips in this series and plan ahead for a better use of time next Ramadan:
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
He also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
Whoever stands (in the voluntary night prayer of) Ramadan out of faith and in hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Abu Hurairah again reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
Whoever stands (in the voluntary night prayer) in Laylat Al-Qadr out of faith and in hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven. (Al-Bukhari)
Afflictions: The Bitter Medicine
Sometimes, the veils of heedlessness are so thick that they keep us away from engaging in such voluntary cleaning process. In such cases, you may be subjected to another cleansing process that you cannot avoid.
Abu Sa`id and Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
No fatigue, nor disease, nor anxiety, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
A Muslim, male or female, continues to remain under trial in respect of his life, property, and offspring until he faces Allah, the Exalted, with no sin record. (At-Tirmidhi)
The most important thing here is not to damage this purification process by showing anger and frustration towards Allah. These times of hardship are chances to get your sins forgiven, to strengthen your personality, to move you closer to Allah throughdu`aa' and extra deeds of goodness.
Allah Almighty says:
{And we will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
Who, when disaster strikes them, say,
"Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."
Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.} (Al-Baqarah 2:155-157)
